Taking Applications for Summer Youth Employment

We are currently inviting applications for two summer positions for youth.  The successful applicant for this position must be between the ages of 15 and 30, as per Government of Canada Summer Jobs guidelines. Preference will be given to those applicants who were formerly employed in these positions in the previous year.

 

POSITION 1 – HOUSING SUPPORT SUMMER ASSISTANT

Carmichael Outreach Inc. is inviting applications for a Housing Support Summer Assistant.  This position works in collaboration with the Needs Enrichment Services Team (NEST) and HIV Strategy Housing Support Coordinator, and reports to the Executive Director.  The successful applicant for this position must be between the ages of 15 and 30, as per Government of Canada Jobs guidelines.

Carmichael Outreach
We are a community based organization that provides services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness.  Besides the provision of free clothing and small household items, and a take away meal service, Carmichael Outreach provides housing search assistance as well as support services.  We are a fast paced environment that deals with crises almost daily.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will produce the weekly housing list of more affordable rental units in the city once a week.  S/he will also do intakes, accompany prospective tenants to viewings, assist with applications for housing and assist tenants with moves.  For people needing follow up support, the successful applicant will accompany them to medical appointments, appointments with social workers, help them with food bank orders and provide them advocacy when required.  This position may also be responsible for other duties within Carmichael Outreach as necessary.

Education/Experience
Priority will be given to but not limited to students who are studying in the area of human services.  A demonstrated understanding of the complexities of poverty, particularly intergenerational poverty, the impacts of residential school and colonialism, as well as addictions and mental health issues are a must, experience working in these areas is an asset.  Good communications skills, oral and written, and the ability to work under pressure with tight timelines is also a must.  A driver’s license is required.

Hourly Wage: $16.50 per hour

POSITION 2 – ADMINISTRATIVE SUPPORT SUMMER ASSISTANT

Carmichael Outreach Inc. is inviting applications for an Administrative Support Summer Employee. This position works in collaboration with the Communications, Advocacy, and Projects Officer and reports to the Executive Director. Per the Government of Canada Summer Jobs requirements, the successful applicant for this position must be between the ages of 15 and 30.

We are a community based organization that provides services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness.  Besides the provision of free clothing and small household items, and a take away meal service, Carmichael Outreach provides housing search assistance as well as support services.  We are a fast paced environment that deals with crises almost daily.

Responsibilities
The successful applicant will work primarily alongside the Communications, Advocacy, and Projects Officer, but will also frequently work with the Receptionist on various tasks. Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to filing, data entry, making phone calls/answering phones, financial responsibilities, supporting fundraising events, writing letters, and covering the front desk. This position may also be responsible for other duties within Carmichael Outreach as necessary.

Education/Experience
Priority will be given but not limited to students who are studying in the area of business administration, office administration, or human services. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate excellent communications skills, oral and written, and the ability to work under pressure with tight timelines. The applicant will have experience with Microsoft Office Word and Excel. A driver’s license is required. A demonstrated understanding of the complexities of poverty, particularly intergenerational poverty, the impacts or residential school and colonialism, as well as addictions and mental health issues are a must.
