Seeking Summer Student for Position of Housing Support Worker

There may be snow on the ground, but summer is just around the corner! We are currently inviting student applications for a Housing Support Worker.  This position works in collaboration with the HIV Housing Support Coordinator and reports to the Executive Director.  The successful applicant for this position must be between the ages of 15 and 30, as per Government of Canada Jobs guidelines, and returning to full time studies in Fall 2018.

We are a community based organization that provides services to people experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness.  Besides the provision of free clothing and small household items, and a take away meal service, Carmichael Outreach provides housing search assistance as well as support services.  We are a fast paced environment that deals with crises almost daily.

The successful applicant will produce the weekly housing list of more affordable rental units in the city once a week.  S/he will also do intakes, accompany prospective tenants to viewings, assist with applications for housing and assist tenants with moves.  For people needing follow up support, the successful applicant will accompany them to medical appointments, appointments with social workers, help them with food bank orders and provide them advocacy when required.  This position may also be responsible for other duties within Carmichael Outreach as necessary.

Priority will be given to but not limited to students who are studying in the area of human services.  A demonstrated understanding of the complexities of poverty, particularly intergenerational poverty, the impacts of residential school and colonialism, as well as addictions and mental health issues are a must, experience working in these areas is an asset.  Good communications skills, oral and written, and the ability to work under pressure with tight timelines is also a must.  A driver’s license is required.
